The Link was set up in response to the Report of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission, Faith in the City, published in 1985 and has been established for thirty years in 2017. Its aim is to share faith with the inner city Deanery of Hackney through personal meetings and visits and to offer financial support. Prayer is at the heart of the Link and a Quarterly Prayer Leaflet is produced.
This Deanery has always believed that the witness of Churches in the Inner City has much to teach the church in Rural Areas and that despite the contrasts in the social environment of the two Deaneries we also have a great deal in common seeking to live our Christian faith in an increasingly secular society.
The parishes of this Deanery send an annual gift of £3000 to the Hackney Chapter which is used as the synod agrees. With the addition of personal donations this is being used, at the request of the Hackney Deanery to support The Dunloe Centre for homeless people at St Saviour’s Priory, The Hackney Winter Night Shelter, St James’ Clapton,St Mark’s Dalston,St Olave, Woodberry Down, who run various food provision schemes, St Paul’s West Hackney, Buds and Bees club which helps parents and children to grow vegetables and flowers and St John Finsbury Park Young Peoples annual Pilgrimage and Holiday.
Each year the Churches of the Bishop’s Waltham Deanery collect food and gifts for the Hackney Churches Winter Night Shelter and Drop in Clubs at The Priory and other churches. These are sorted and packed in December and taken up to Hackney although it’s likely that this will not continue in 2017 as local sources in Hackney, including a Waitrose supermarket and several schools are now supporting these schemes.
In 2016 fourteen people from seven of our parishes carried out a Walk of Prayer starting at St Saviour’s Priory and visiting St Michael’s London Fields, St Mark’s Dalston and St James, Clapton during which we were able to share worship with our partners and give some of them the cheques from our Deanery to help with the schemes mentioned above. We hope to repeat this in 2017 and possibly to welcome a party from St James Hackney here if a suitable date can be found.
